On Nov. 8, Chelsea resident Sarah Wiles waited outside the Market Basket there for an Uber ride, along with her boyfriend, Ben Chase, and her guide dog, Atlas.

ut what is usually a routine task ended with the couple going through four different drivers, two of whom declined to give the trio a ride due to Atlas.

And it isn’t the first time Wiles, who is blind, said that she’s struggled to get a ride from a ride service company due to having service dog.

“It’s happened at least a dozen times over the past two years,” Wiles said, noting that if a driver cancels her ride, it’s usually when she either texts or calls them to let them know she has Atlas with her. “It’s pretty common.”

At first glance, Lily Reilly looks like just another cute girl. But don’t be mistaken: She’s a working woman with a rough job.

Lily, a 5-year-old labradoodle, was the first of her Caring Canines colleagues to take the witness stand in a Maryland court Nov. 7, comforting a child while she testified as a rape survivor in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court.

Lily can’t take people’s trauma away, but she can put her head in their lap as they recount the worst moment of their lives. And that sweet, calming presence can make a world of a difference for victims, said her handler Barb Reilly, who stood next to the witness stand holding Lily’s leash and escorted her through the court.

“In other cases, she sits in the courtroom... But this was different. This was a much bigger case,” Reilly said. “I think the child really, really appreciated having the dog there. It gave her a chance to decompress."

Tips For Preparing Your Pup For A Pack Walk

The wild pack

As all owners know, walking your dog is a top priority to keep pups happy and healthy. Walks provide great low-impact exercise for dogs of all ages and their owners. It also allows dogs to explore the wide world that exists outside of their own backyards.

Dogs are stimulated by sights and sounds, and they want to understand their surroundings. Bringing your pup out into the world also helps desensitize them to noise and teaches them to keep calm in a crowd. What’s more, exploring as a group is something dogs innately crave. In the wild, canids venture out together in search of food, so being a part of a greater pack is part of their nature. One of the best ways to help your domesticated dog satisfy that instinctual need is to join a group dog walk.
